Night of the Museums

The Night of the Museums is held throughout Europe on 19 May. This initiative is sponsored by the Council of Europe* and takes place in parallel with the events commemorated by the ICOM (International Council of Museums) for the International Day of Museums, held on 18 May.

This year, more than 2,000 museums from all over Europe are participating in this very special nocturnal event, opening their doors during the night and enabling access to the museums outside their normal opening times. Museums from all over Spain, France, Germany, Italy, Russia, Portugal, Austria, Poland.... will be contributing to the illumination of the cultural scene of our old continent on the night of 19 May.

A wide range of culture and leisure can be expected, since at the same time as the special opening hours there will also be activities that will have the main purpose of bringing to the museums, through their collections, a larger number of visitors. These activities will include workshops, guided tours, concerts, theatre, audiovisuals.... all of them encouraged by the same festive spirit.

*Created on 5 May 1949, the Council of Europe's mission is to promote a common democratic and legal space in Europe, organised around the European Convention on Human Rights and other benchmark texts on the protection of individuals.
