Since 1977, International Museum Day is celebrated all around the world on 18 May, which was the date decided in the 12th ICOM General Assembly (International Council of Museums) in Moscow.
The ICOM, created in 1946, is a non-governmental organisation attached to UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation ), with status as advisory body to The United Nations Economic and Social Council. The ICOM groups together museums and professionals and focuses on the conservation, maintenance and communication of the natural and cultural heritage of the world, present and future, tangible and intangible.
For this year, 2007, the lemma chosen by the ICOM for the International Museum day is: “Museums and Universal Heritage”, which is designed, through the organisation of multiple and diverse activities in more than 145 countries throughout the world, to encourage access to museum collections with the aim of demonstrating the close relationship between cultural diversity and universal heritage
