Since humans became sedentary and began to establish organised settlements, territorial defence has been a constant concern throughout the history of humanity. Humans have built castles, fortresses, defensive towers or walls; generally located in strategic positions to control crossroads, to protect borders or coasts, etc. But there has also always been concern for defending human settlements. From prehistoric times, population centres have been surrounded by walls, since they were the most effective means of protection against external threats.
Today, a number of historical walls remain, especially from the Medieval period. The cities have grown over time and the walls are now located inside, surrounding the "historical quarters". Nowadays they are a part of the features of these cities, integrated into their urban landscape. We are used to living with them, but we may not truly know them. There future now presents a challenge: conserving them and incorporating them into the city development plans.
