National Committee

With a view to managing the challenges inherent to Decision 1983/2006 of the European Parliament and Council concerning the European Year of Intercultural Dialogue, the Cabinet Meeting held on 16 March 2007 approved a Royal Decree to create a National Committee for the Promotion of Intercultural Dialogue, as the national body for institutional representation and co-ordination of the action undertaken by various government entities in this field. This action guarantees the participation at national and autonomous region levels and by local entities and civil society in all actions aimed towards making the European Year of Intercultural Dialogue visible.

As stipulated in article 4 of the aforementioned Decision, the functions of this Committee include the following:

  • To disseminate the objectives of the European Year of Intercultural Dialogue (2008).
  • To promote intercultural dialogue and therefore facilitate the objectives established by the UNESCO Convention on the protection and promotion of cultural diversity.
  • To encourage participation from non-governmental organisations, institutions and government bodies in projects dealing with cultural diversity and intercultural dialogue.
  • To prepare and elaborate a national programme of events to be held during 2008 and to co-ordinate the various initiatives, respecting the independence of sponsors and achieving an integrated event with solidarity.
  • To instigate the exchange of information and experiences in this field.
  • To appoint a national representative for the committee or body who shall assist the European Commission in the organisation and celebration of the European Year of Intercultural Dialogue.
  • All actions resulting from the organisation and celebration of the European Year of Intercultural Dialogue which require intervention from the National Committee.
  • To prepare a report at the end of the year detailing the actions included in the national programme of events, in order to send it to the EU Council and provide the corresponding promotion of the same.
