Cultural Cooperation and Promotion Abroad

Cultural action abroad

Cultural action abroad is one of the key elements of public diplomacy, and aims to project an image of Spain or brand Spain which is in keeping with the country's creative plural contemporary cultural reality. The General Strategy 2012-2015 of the State Secretariat for Culture stresses the role to be played by Culture as a fundamental element of de “brand Spain” strengthening the internationalization of cultural and creative industries (CCI) and their real potential within the digital economy and as a major resource for competitiveness, sustainable growth and job creation. The objectives of this action, which are set out in a Comprehensive Plan, drawn up in co-ordination with all the other institutional players working in the cultural action abroad have the following priorities in this scope:

  • To promote brand Spain by conveying its cultural elements based on modernity, diversity, creativity and cultural heritage, boosting the internationalization of the cultural and creative sector.
  • To promote dissemination of the official languages of Spain, their cultural-economic value and the transition of the cultural and creative sectors to the digital arena.
  • To create unique exhibitions to showcase Spain's cultural and creative sector at cultural events, meetings and forums of international prestige, and at important historical-artistic commemorations.
  • To promote excellence in cultural tourism as a factor contributing to both the brand Spain image abroad and to economic growth.

To meet these objectives, the Sub Directorate-General for Cultural Promotion Abroad, promotes multidisciplinary cultural programs to focus specific activities on a small number of priority countries, working in partnership with the Sociedad Estatal Acción Cultural Española (AC/E) and several organizations, in particular the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Co-operation, the Instituto Cervantes, and the Autonomous Communities.
