Document consultation at the General Administration Archive

All documentation is open to access except:

  • Documents covered by current legislation related to access (article 57, Law 16/85 on Spanish Historical Heritage).
  • Documents in poor state of conservation or restoration (article 62, Law 16/1985 on Spanish Historical Heritage).
  • Documents in the process of organisation.
  • Special resources (parchments, glass plates, etc.).

In the three latter cases, express authorisation to consult the material is required from management at the centre.

Consultation of the resources is individual and each researcher is responsible for the documents that they receive. Therefore, consultation in a viewing station by two or more researchers, or the interchange of material with other users, is prohibited. Likewise, researchers may not have more than one article at their desk.

For reasons of security and conservation, researchers may only use loose paper, pencil or laptop computer, and may not use fountain, ball-point or felt-tip pens while consulting the documents.

Researchers are urged to handle the documents with the utmost care, without changing their order within the envelope or in the box. Under no circumstances may documents be marked or numbered in any way.
